After a long vacation, the day had come for the freshman and old students of Aklan State University. On the 5th day of August 2019 was the exact date for the opening of class for the school year 2019-2020.
It was a cloudy morning. I could hear the sound of thunder and lightning since midnight and heavy rain was expected during the day because of typhoon Falcon. Despite the typhoon, this is not the reason to lose our excitement, a mixture of emotions actually because summer is over.
I woke up early in the morning to prepare my breakfast. After that I took a bath and dressed up, put some powder and lipstick and I am done. I prepared my umbrellas, wore my jackets, hung my bag and I am ready to go.
The weather was extremely pleasant. The rain showers in the morning uplifted my mood and this long walk to the school in the rain made feel better. But, while I was walking some of the roads had overflowing water due to lack of drainage. And makes my rain made feel better. But, while I was walking some of the roads had overflowing water due to lack of drainage. And makes my shoes get wet and dirty.
I go to school as early as I can. I can feel the breezy air, and seeing those smiling faces of the new students makes me comfortable. I saw some students are soaking and wet because of the heavy rain but still, they can manage to smile and feel that they were in college.
While turning another year is often said to come with more wisdom, this is only another part for the transition from freshman year of college to sophomore year of college. Yes! I’m in my second year in college now. I can’t believe in myself right now that I passed my first year in ASU. I enter the university again, as a sophomore student, however, it is filled with excitement, high expectations, and maybe even a few tears of joy because you’re returning to the university where you did, in fact, find your place. A place where you’ll attempt to have a year that is even better than your first one.
“Nong, siin do TE 4?” In the other side, “Ma’am siin kami makabue’o it schedules namon?”, “Siin eon baea ang mga classmate ngato?” “Selfie kita post mo dayon ag i-tag kamon #FIRSTDAYOFSCHOOL” those are some few words that I heard from the students.
I’m quite nervous or a little bit scared on the first day of school yet excited because of all the new things: new teachers, and making new friends because of my new section. Sadly, I got separated from my closest friends in my previous section, Ken Jero and Rica. These two of my friends are the one who makes me feel more comfortable with when I’m with them.
As I enter our room at the MBR for my first subject, the Literature, I keep talking to myself “it’s been a year as I enter the university as a freshman, from freshman year to sophomore year, real-quick, two more years to go and your parents will be proud of you. Just keep going, self”. As I’ve been expected, classes get harder, and more school works to do.
The first day of school is quite hard when it comes to classes, having a new classmate is quite hard to deal with it, it is very different than last year. It’s the first day of school but we have an assignment, I swear I got a lot of more things to do in the next nine months. Even though classes or assignments get noticeably harder, sophomores also get noticeably better at putting off all work until the last minute. To be honest, I love cramming, sometimes. I can do such things in a hurry to past it on time even though there’s a lot of time to do it in the past few days. Call it stupidity or confidence, but surviving one year of college makes the massive workload seem not nearly as terrifying. Also, surviving one year in ASU makes me proud of, despite homesickness and everything.
After we ate our lunch, we fixed ourselves and we are ready to go for our first subject in the afternoon, the Linguistics. Mr. Casimero, our professor for this subject talked about that we should speak in English even if it is not fluent for as long as we talk in English. Also, during the presentation, we should act like a boss, we have the confidence to talk in front and discuss the assigned topic to us. All the things that Mr. Casimero said to us, it is for our own good. We can use that as our weapon through our college journey until we graduate.
Our room for the last subject for the first day of school is in the SB1 which is the Ethics. Sadly, I got my skin itchy because of some mosquito bite. Mrs. Nabor our professor for the subject discussed the syllabus and what will happen in the next few days in her class.
After a long day in school, the first day of school is quite exciting. One aspect of growing older in college that most people don’t realize will happen is how much change and growth you experience as a person. It seems like every year I look back and say “Wow, I am so different than I used to be.” However, halfway through my college journey, I finally realized something else: I am constantly growing and changing and I know that I have still not become the final version of myself.
I can say with confidence that I am the most comfortable with myself right now that I have ever been. So, if you thought freshman year was a good one, get ready for the sophomore year. It will be full of fun, amazing friends and self-acceptance
Maybe change is a good thing, after all.
